Edmundo R. Gonzalez
From the Laredo Morning Times June 16, 2001

Mr. Edmundo R. Gonzalez, 89, passed away Wednesday, June 13, 2001, after a brief illness. He was born in Monterrey, N.L., Mexico.

Mr. Gonzalez was extremely active until his death. He enjoyed ranching, traveling, dancing (including square dancing) and always had a positive attitude. He was a very devout Catholic, a Knight of Columbus and rejoiced being able to take communion to the sick in the parish of Christ the King. He was a gentleman and a great example to all who knew him. He was deeply affected upon the completion of the Cursillos retreat. For many years, he was instrumental in organizing a pilgrimage to Morelia, Mexico, in honor of the Holy Infant of Good Health.

Last year, Mr. Gonzalez was very proud when he was asked by Rice University to be interviewed on the topic of how people of Mexican descent were treated at the University in the 1930s. His wife, sister-in-law, Estela Barreda and three of his sisters graduated from Rice. He gave a two-hour interview, which is filed, in the Rice Library for access by the students.

Mr. Gonzalez was preceded in death by his wife, Maria Ana Barreda de Gonzalez, his sisters, Diana, Consuelo, Olivia, Celia, Yolanda; and his in-laws, Gerardo and Tala Montemayor, Estela Barreda and Mariano (Yolanda) Ortega.

Mr. Gonzalez is survived by his three sons, Edmundo (Peggy) Gonzalez Jr., Jorge (Debbie) Gonzalez and Roberto (Pita) Gonzalez, his grandchildren, Ed III, Rebecca, Dr. Ana (Mike) Gardner, Cristina, Cesar (Karen), Daniela, Omar and his great-grandson Jason.

Mr. Gonzalez is also survived by numerous relatives, cousins, nephews and friends.

A rosary was recited on Friday, June 15, 2001, at 7 p.m. at Joe Jackson Heights Funeral Chapels, 719 Loring at Cortz. Visitation was held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2001, at 8:45 a.m. from Joe Jackson Heights Funeral Chapels, 719 Loring at Cortez to Christ the King Catholic Church for a Holy Mass at 9 a.m.

Pallbearers will be Cesar Gonzalez, Ed Gonzalez III, Omar Gonzalez, Jonathan Clark, Jose Luis Tijerina, Steven Billingsley, Raul Mendez Jr. and Fausto Rodriguez.

Interment will be held at the family plot in the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Joe Jackson Heights Funeral Chapels, 719 Loring at Cortez.
